Hi, i am from Australia and only just joined the Forum. I am only new to crystal glazing, and very interested in having a go. could I please get some advise on how many coats of coloured porcelain slip I need to brush on for a stoneware clay base. Any advise would be appreciated. Thank you Marj

Hello Marjr,
Surprised that no one has replied and even though it is dated and your testing may have answered your question, here is my opinion.
The key is finding a compatible porcelain that won't flake or crack due to different shrinking properties from the stoneware. Given that it will stick, I would ensure that the stoneware is completely covered, so one good coat or several thinner coats. The crystal glaze does not not flow as well on a rough surface, though, I make my pedestals with stoneware and crystals will form on them. You will also likely get some influence from the stoneware elements, especially iron. I have done this numerous times and the crystals are not a nice as directly on porcelain, but interesting nonetheless. Tim

I have made some pieces using porcelain slip and will be doing a crystal firing in the next week, hoping it will work out. I will keep you updated.
