This is a 3110 base with copper and manganese, soaked in dilute acid and post reduction fired. Our post reduction firing goes from room to reduction temp in a bit over one hour which this combination is unable to withstand, hence the pock marks, etc. Cheers, Gordon

Thanks Gordon, This 644 frit that has been used a lot, how are the results different from 3110 that I used for years. Does it withstand reduction and 3110 not so well?

are you suggesting the pock marks come from a fast rate of incline?
ive gotten those before and i think it just has to do with the metals, percentages, and the amount of reduction.
and cannot comment on 644 but 3110 reduces just fine.

A post reduction of a 3110 glaze with copper turning ruby red was published in Jon Price's book, using 4% copper, yet some have posted the red can be reach with much less copper, and there isn't any mention of tin ox being added, as in most reduction red glaze formulas. Any insights on this? The blistered piece looks like things may have burned out from the clay body? Do you think it could have been a result of such rapid temp rise? 1500 in 1 hour? Or to intense of reduction? Does anyone use oxyprobe and log degrees of reduction that has worked best for them? Bill

All my post firing reductions go at the same increase rate, a bit over an hour room to 770c (~1430f) without ill effect. It dawned on me while writing the post these go in right after the acid soak and they are the only ones that have received that treatment and end up so. I'll follow up for sure.
By the way 644 frit is 29.43 %Na2O and in comparison similar 413 is 16.99 %Na2O (Digitalfire). Sr. Mariscal's 644 base is then 14% Na2O and the 413 base (~68 413 24 ZnO 8 SiO2) is then ~12% Na2O which I would judge to be a fair substitution.
As for copper red , suggest do your own tests, in my opinion anything in a book is merely a starting point. Cheers, Gordon

Thanks Gordon, Why do you do the acid bath before the reduction?

Gordon, Have you found that the background is effected better by doing the acid bath before the reduction? Bill

Hi to all, bbucky I try some reduction post fire galaxy glaze but the frit 644 has some problems in the background at temperatures higher than 750 ° celsius cracks in the background, you can do the reduction in the ascent, after maintaining 20 minutes 750º celsius all this before the acid No nice reduction 850º celsius to much Jose

Thanks Jose, Regarding the ruby red, Have you found it unnecessary to go beyond 2% copper for strong red results? Bbucky

Thanks Jose, You have mentioned using a slip over stoneware that , is that slip recipe available, or is it a commercially produced product?

I've been experimenting with gold stuff, galaxy, and just adjusting the zinc and frit to my clay body and cone preference. And praying for blessing. I don't know how to post pics but here is a link to a video. youtu.be/5RrLq-t2mSE
