I'm wondering how long my glazes will last a) in powder form and b) in liquid form if I mix them ahead of time. I think I read somewhere that crystalline glazes go off? I want to mix some to use in the next 2 months & others to use in about 6-8 months from now. Does anyone know?

I consider myself a bit of a newbie but I will tell you what I know since no one has got back to you yet. If you have lithium (which is also in spodomene and petalite if I remember correctly), you need to use the glaze right away or within a couple of weeks at most if it is wet. That is why I usually use no lithium or use use about .1% at most. Also, CMC breaks down the organic components in your glaze eventually if it's wet so it's said not to make glaze store well. I use Epson salts 1% in my glazes to thicken them up for application instead of CMC because of the storage issue. Additionally, if you have nickel in a wet glaze, you need to use it immediately (and remember that it is the opposite of food safe). If you stay away from those components, I have heard of people storing their wet glazes up to 2 years or more.
I haven't heard of people having any issues with storing mixed powdered glazes.
If you don't have it already, I strongly recommend Fara Shimbo's book. She gives so much information on glaze components and interactions. Good luck with your work!

Thank you both. One of my glazes is nickel, but I'm not using spudomene or lithium, so I should be able to make the other glazes up. That's going to save me a lot of time. I've got two of Farah Shimbo's books, but haven't seen anything about glaze storage in them yet.
