I have just unpacked a whole kiln load of pots that have come out a Matt dull color with no crystals,in the previous two firings I have had good results with these glazes, they came out shiny and with nice crystals. My good results in my previous firings have only happened in the middle of the kiln, don't know if this matters. I followed the same firing cycle as before, has anyone got any ideas why the whole kiln load came out like this. I fire to 1260c cone 6. I have an image of what the pieces look like but can't figure out how to put the image up on this forum...for you to have a look at.

mistake on compounding glaze, glaze too thin, didnt fire hot enough, If they are crystal glaze kiln took too long to reach temperature or you cooled to too low of a soaking temperature you should have cones all around the kiln till you know your kiln, there are more ways to screw it up than to get it right. welcome to the conundrum

Thanks for the reply Jim, I will put some cones in next time. I don,t think it is a problem with the glaze formula I think my kiln either was fired too high or too low I just wanted to know which...if you get a matt glaze result like that, would that mean the kiln was under fired or over fired? ?

if it was too high you would have a clear glossy finish and overflowing catchers,i prefer that to underfired

I will go higher the next time, maybe 1275c and I'll let you know the results. I appreciate having some advice on these things....it helps when you are new at something to have someone to ask..once again thanks!

I am often wrong but my experience is that the matt finish is actually microcrystalline... usually as a result of cooling much too fast. Increase soak time.

Need pics. No one can give you accurate advice without a picture of the piece.
