First and foremost I would like to introduce myself. My name is John Garrison, and I believe I have developed a slight obsession to the art of Crystalline Ceramics. I grew up in Carthage, North Carolina just South East of Seagrove, NC. As many of you know Seagrove has a large community that has a long standing history in the ceramic arts. I am more than positive some members of this forum are from the area. I am currently serving in the United States Army stationed out of Ft. Bragg, NC and have been in for almost eight years this upcoming January.. Though I am currently deployed, I have had to put my new found fascination on hold for the time being. However, that does not stop me from my research in crystalline ceramics in my down time here in Afghanistan. It was maybe about a year ago when I started to take real interest in ceramics and pursued it as just a weekend hobby in my down time from the Army.
I bought my own wheel and Skutt Kiln and built a small studio to work in. I mostly learned on my own with little help from anyone as far as actual turning goes. I caught on fairly quickly with techniques learned from books and demonstrations. I had known about crystalline pottery for a while but never thought I could accomplish the finished product. But with great determination and study I was able to come up with some "decent" results.. nowhere near as beautiful as some of the pieces I've seen on this forum, but, none the less it was the result of my dedication and patience and for a beginner I will accept it, learn from my mistakes, and progress. My kiln only fires to Cone 8 so I have been experimenting with Cone 6 glazing and with plenty of flux I came up with a few good recipes to obtain decent result with low fire crystalline. I have been kind of a ghost in reading this forum since last year but I figured since its almost time for me to come back home I would introduce myself finally. I have a great desire to learn and develop my knowledge in the art. I will figure out how to post photos of some of my work that I got from my last fire before I deployed. I'm starting to write a novel here so ill cut it short. I look forward to chatting with you all. Thank you for reading
