Seeing the price of zincite rise I have started using other stones as seeds. Hi Mark, I've been using natural hemimorphite from the Sterling Hill Mine in NJ. There is a ready supply of red zincite and willemite which may be collected from their "dump" for a fee. Cheers, Gordon

I visited the Franklin Mineral Museum and tailings dump site years ago. Got a few pieces of Willemite, didn't find any zincite in the dump site. Got some zincite "fines" and some hemimorphite several years back. began exploring by pressing "seeds" into leatherhard pots and got good results. At workshop years ago Phil Hamlin was gluing seeds to surface of bisqued pot. Any preferences for application?

I take 162.8g ZnO and mix it with 60.1g SiO2. These are the stoichiometric amounts for the formation of willemite. I burn this mixture during a normal crystal glaze firing. This gives me a rather hard product, which I then break up and sieve out. 0.3mm - 0.4mm pieces are ideal for seeding crystal glazes.

Hi Bill, Last year the Sterling Hill Mine began removing ore from a storage silo, literally tons of zincite are available. I glaze the pot then indent it to position the seed which is "glued " in with glaze. Cheers, Gordon
