Hi I am relatively new to Crystalline Glaze but so far having great fun trying different options.
My base glazes so far have been chosen from William Schran article in "Cone 5-6 Glazes, Ceramics Arts Handbook Series" and from this I have tried MFE (Dan Turnidge Revised), FA's Base (Revised) and FA's #5 (Revised). For the moment I would like to stick with Cone 6 as a maturing temperature to fit with limitations of my kiln.
I have recently purchased and read Fara Shimbo's book "Crystalline Glazes" and am really impressed with the systematic way she has broken down and illustrated the effects from different combinations of oxides and additions, brilliant! What I am not clear about though is that she make distinction between Opaque and Low Ti glaze and I am not clear exactly what constitutes each of the two catagories, probably obvious to you experts out there. Can I assume that MFE and FA base represent Opaque and FA#5 would be regarded as low Ti? If not what would be good representative base formulations.
Many thanks

Hi Mike,
I am not familiar with Fara's terminology, but I do use Titanium in a lot of my glazes and consider it an important variable. I have observed that when I get into the higher amounts of Ti - around 7 -9%, my backgrounds tend to become opaque, where as at 5% and under, my backgrounds are generally translucent. Ti effects my glazes with respect to color and crystal size and shape as well. I don't know Fara's recipes, but in my hands, the glaze's backgrounds don't normally go opaque until there is greater than 6% Ti, at least not in my ^10 glazes.
Happy experimenting, Marie
