I'm a student and pretty new to crystalline glazing. I'm trying to do a write up and I want to include something on felting. I've read a bit about it, but I haven't seen any images to show me what we're talking about. Can anyone help me with an image or two?

Hi GillBanks,
I did a google search on pottery felting. I have never heard of it before in regard to ceramics. Based on that fact and after doing Crystalline Glaze pottery for about eight years and what I found on Google, I would have to say that it has "Nothing" to do with this art form Perhaps you can give a web link to this art form that would give further information regarding this.

Hi Paul, I've got a Fara Shimbo book that talks about it. It seems to refer to a fault and I'm guessing it's bits that stick up, but I'm not sure. I googled it as well, so I'm hoping someone here can help me!

back in the mid 70's i got a job with George Menard who had Spinning Tiger potters wheels he needed someone who could throw a large pot on one of his wheels which were more like a phonagraph turntable than a potters wheel. I succeeded and was in his ads that ran in ceramics monthly for a couple years. then he decided to start a pottery and we built a 400 cu ft fiberceramic kiln that was octagon shaped downdraft that lifted up vertically, that was about 8' in diameter and 7 feet tall inside. it was one of the first fiber kilns outside of the aerospace industry. unfortuneatly that enterprise went bust and also led to the closing the wheel biz, on the bright side i ended up with that kiln which i operated for about 5 years in north hollwood called Saticoy Stoneware till i also went broke ,got divorced and moved up to northern California(best thing that ever happened to me!) anyway ive had several large fiber kilns and also have a nice fiber lining in my lungs

OK, we have managed to come up with a bunch of stuff that does not appear to be what Fara was talking about, very amusing But I found this link on google search, which is chopped off:............. bumpy surface, which I think looks kinda ....... So I think it refers to a surface effect ...........

I believe the word Fara uses is not a ceramic term but more an obsevational term she uses herself. What she is referring to with felting is when the crystals grow so close to each other and so fast and long that they literally grow out of the glaze causing a rough patch. It kind of looks like felt, however it is not soft to the touch but rather rough and possibly sharp.
I believe this happens more so on flat surfaces than vertical surfaces and it is not the result of a thin area but rather a thicker area and when the glaze has either too much zinc, not enough melt, or both.
